Most of us have sought or been taught several effective stress management techniques. Fortunately, there are many proven and diverse ways to help counter the debilitating effects of stress on health and healing. But here is one you may not have linked with stress: nourishing your body with healing essential fatty acids. Did you know that fat activates the pleasure centers in your brain and creates a surge of dopamine? These are the same pleasure centers that are activated by sugar and flour comfort foods which is why it is so hard to resist eating them. So how about a swap here? What are Essential Fatty Acids?
Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are the polyunsaturated fats; omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid) and omega-6 (linoleic acid) that your body requires but cannot manufacture itself. They have to be taken in through diet – and ideally in a ratio of 4 omega-6 to 1 omega-3.
Unfortunately, the Western diet contains an excessively high amount of cancer-causing omega-6 fatty acids and a low amount of cancer-preventing omega-3 fatty acids. Studies have shown that the average American consumes between 14 to 25 times more omega-6 than omega-3 fatty acids! Consistent with these findings, a study from The Center for Genetics, Nutrition, and Health, in Washington, DC, estimates that in Western diets, the ratio is 15:1 to 16.7:1 (omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids). This is not good news and is yet another reason for making significant dietary changes when desiring significant healing.
In proper balance, the anti-inflammatory effects of the omega-3 fatty acids are protective of many chronic and deadly illnesses including cancer. For example, researchers at UCLA School of Medicine in California found optimal levels of omega-3 fatty acids prevented the development and progression of prostate cancer by altering the COX-2 expression and prostaglandin production in prostate tissue.

By getting rid of the harmful transfats found in almost all processed foods and selecting more foods from the above lists, you can move to a much healthier ratio of EFAs.
