Eating the right foods is key when dealing with healing from cancer – regardless of the treatments utilized. And its even more important when choosing to do chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. But dietary support is just the start of ridding your body of radio-toxicity and minimizing the unavoidable DNA damage that follows in its wake.

Here are some simple and effective measures and tips you can do for yourself…

What do Miso Soup and Green Tea have in common?

Green tea

For most people, the answer will be that both are served in Japanese restaurants.  And while that might be true, that is not the link I am looking to expose. Rather it is the fact that both miso soup and green tea are radioprotective – meaning they help protect your healthy cells from the toxic effect of radiation therapy.

miso soupMiso contains an ingredient called zybicolin, which acts at as a binding agent to detoxify and eliminate radioactive pollutants from the body.  Adding dried kelp to the soup (as often done in Japanese restaurants) is a good idea since kelp, a seaweed sodium alginate, also neutralizes such toxins.. It will increase the binding and elimination even more.  This is because it contains Epigallo-catechin-gallate (EGCG), which absorbs radioactive isotopes associated with radiation so that they can be excreted. Green (and black tea), like the seaweed, contain EGCG – which is also a cancer-fighting compound in its own right.

Five more foods to reduce radiation toxins:

  1. Tempeh, which is a fermented soybean product, blocks the intake of certain radioactive isotopes while strengthening the immune system and helping the gut. Make sure you use organic Tempeh. Hint: Fermented soy is the only soy that I recommend – which, in my book, leaves out the ever-popular tofu and soymilks.
  2. Mineral-rich foods are important because when you are mineral deficient, the body will absorb more radioactive minerals.  Your seaweeds are a good choice again, along with lots of green vegetables, and sulfur-rich foods and compounds such as N-acetyl-cysteine. Selenium is also important and can be found in those green and black teas (organic please) as well as in mushrooms, Siberian ginseng and the immune-boosting herb, astragalus.
  3. Cooked tomatoes are also a good choice because of their high lycopene content. It, too, serves multiple purposes. Lycopene is radio-proctective against mutations from gamma radiation. It is also a cancer-inhibiting substance that improves your T-cell function and, as a carotenoid, it enhances your immune system in general.
  4. Beta-carotene is another good carotene. It was shown to be radio-protective for 700 children exposed to radiation at Chernobyl. It reduced the DNA damage from radiation exposure. You can find these carotenes in sweet potatoes, winter squash, beets and carrots, spinach and chard.
  5. Brassica foods such as cabbage, broccoli,
  6.  Cauliflower, brussel sprouts, kale, mustard greens and bok choy have also been proved to be radio-protective. And they contain sulfur-rich antioxidants, which inhibit the free radical damage created by radiation.

Herbs like burdock root, curcumin, slippery elm, red clover are also very powerful for this purpose. Then there are stranger sounding things like zeolite, blue-green algae, clay baths and so much more. And soon we will talk about the recharging of the immune system, something also required after radiation.

It’s a lot to think about. It’s a lot to know and for whatever the reasons, you typically won’t learn about these life-enhancing, health-promoting, cancer-fighting and protective measures from your oncologist or family doctor. And you won’t learn how to use them once you learn of them.  That is why I put together my new live ReVitalize U™ program, which walks you through detoxifying from chemotherapy and/or radiation.  While there are commonalities to detoxifying from both, there are very specific things we do just for radiation detox.

If you’ve done radiation, please utilize all the tips found in this article and then strongly consider joining me at ReVitalize U™.   I’d love to work with you personally.
