One of the most important discoveries in biology and medicine of the past fifteen years is that cancer stem cells are largely responsible for the failure of conventional cancer treatment.

What are Cancer Stem Cells?

Cancer Stem cells make up a small part of tumor cells (~ 1:1000), and they have the ability to self-renew and the ability to give rise to all cell types that make up a cancer tumor. They drive tumor development, progression, metastasis and drug resistance and are highly resistant to chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments. Even more alarming, it has been discovered that chemotherapy seems to actually increase the number of cancer stem cells and encourage malignancy while conventional radiotherapy appears able to convert non-cancerous breast cells into cancer stem cells.

What this means to Cancer Treatment and to You 

These discoveries explain why chemotherapy and radiation by themselves have a poor cure rate, with remissions often lasting only months to single digit years and why some cancer patients feel that their conventional treatments may be the reason that their seemingly isolated, non-malignant cancer became malignant.

It also explains why we need to address the reasons cancer got a foothold in our bodies in the first place and learn to become an inhospitable host for not only cancer tumor cells but also for cancer stem cells.

A new study published in the journal Anticancer Research titled, “Natural Products That Target Cancer Stem Cells,” has reviewed the research literature and lists the top nutritional substances that actually kill cancer stem cells. You will find that list below, along with some of their commonly recognizable dietary sources:

  • Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) – Green Tea
  • 6-Gingerol – Ginger
  • β-Carotene – Carrot, Leafy Greens
  • Curcumin – Turmeric
  • Delphinidin – blueberries, raspberries
  • Flavonoids (Genistein) – Soy, red clover, coffee
  • Guggulsterone – Commiphora (myrrh tree) (myrrh essential oil)
  • Isothiocyanates – Cruciferous vegetables
  • Linalool – Mint, citrus essential oils
  • Lycopene – Grapefruit, tomato
  • Parthenolide – Feverfew
  • Perylill alcohol – Mint, cherry, lavender

  • Resveratrol – Grapes, plums, berries
  • Silibinin – Milk Thistle
